Sustainability is the ability to sustain or preserve a process or system. Sustainability is achieved through Sustainable Development, defined as: “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Sustainable development aims at preserving the planet and meeting human needs. This means that a natural resource exploited in a sustainable way will last forever and can also be exploited by future generations.

Sustainability Tripod

The so-called sustainability tripod is based on three principles: social, environmental and economic. These three factors need to be integrated for sustainability to actually happen. Without them, sustainability does not hold up.

Preliminary results of the 2018 Global Sustainability Index Institute report analysing 400 of the world’s largest companies with a combined market cap of more than $25 trillion indicates “the number of statements on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) had more than doubled.

Society is demanding that companies and its projects, both public and private, serve a social purpose. To prosper over time, every company must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society.

Companies must benefit all of their stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, and the communities in which they operate.
